Dear colleagues,

We are sorry to share the sad news that James E. Baumgartner, one of the greatest set theorists, died of a heart attack on December 28. Jim was born in 1943 and started as a student at Caltech and then moved to Berkeley where he received his PhD under the supervision of Robert Vaught in 1970. He spent most of his career at Dartmouth College where he trained numerous PhD students, among them Jean Larson, Tadatoshi Miyamoto, Alan Taylor and Stan Wagon, and postdocs, including Alessandro Andretta, Jorg Brendle, Elizabeth Brown, James Cummings, Jean-Pierre Levinski, Stevo Todorcevic and Jindrich Zapletal.

Baumgartner’s mathematical career started with a wonderful proof of the consistency that every Aronszajn tree is special (independently obtained by Reindhart and Malitz, and published as a joint paper). His later consistency result that all aleph_1 dense sets of reals can be isomorphic initiated a long series of important contributions in this direction. His joint work with Hajnal to prove omega_1 arrows (alpha)^2_n, for all countable alpha and finite n using the methods of
forcing and absolutness was a real breakthrough that has become known as the Baumgartner-Hajnal Theorem.

Together with Laver, Baumgartner studied countable support iterations of Sacks forcing and later isolated an important class of forcing notions which can be iterated without collapsing \aleph_1: Axiom A forcings. Following the work of Shelah on proper forcing, Baumgartner formulated and proved the relative consistency of the Proper Forcing Axiom, which has become one of the most studied additional axioms of set theory. In addition, he developed general techniques for building proper partial orders by using side conditions and obtained numerous consequences of PFA. In all his papers, Jim showed extreme originality and clarity. In addition he wrote many survey papers which have inspired young set theorists: his introduction to iterated forcing is still one of the basic references in this area, as well as his beautiful surveys on uncountable linear orders and on applications of the Proper Forcing Axiom.

In spite of his great talent and achievements he never put his own work in front of that of the others and generously helped all who came across him as students and colleagues. His mathematical genius and humanity were a constant inspiration for young mathematicians following in his footsteps. He will be deeply missed by his friends and colleagues.

[This post prepared by Mirna Dzamonja, Jean Larson and Boban Velickovic].

The Third European Set Theory Meeting will take place July 4 -7 2011
in Edinburgh. The meeting is now open for applications for those who
wish to attend.

The conference is funded jointly by ESF-ERCOM and the International Centre for
Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh (with further support from the INFTY Project).
See the nascent website of the meeting.

There are limited number of places available, and according to ESF procedures, there
is a Conference Fee and an application process which asks those wishing to
attend to fill out an on-line application form here:

There is a DEADLINE for this of March 27th. Soon thereafter applicants will be notified of the outcome.
It is hoped that, as in the previous two meetings at Bedlewo, there will be the possibilities of grants to
assist with attendance of younger researchers.

[NB The ESF webform offers the possibility of applicants giving "short talks": in fact there will not be such,
but only Invited Speakers. There will be the opportunity of a Poster Session, if colleagues wish to submit a poster.]

We are pleased to announce the third Young Set Theory
Workshop which will take place between 15-19 February 2010 near
Vienna. The aim of this conference is to bring together PhD students
and postdocs in Set Theory in order to learn from leading researchers
in the field, hear about the latest research and to discuss research
issues in a co-operative environment.

The conference format will be similar to previous years, including
tutorials, postdoc research talks and discussion sessions. For more
information, please see:
http://www.math.uni-bonn.de/people/logic/events/young-set-theory-2010/

All accommodation, lectures, discussions and meals will be at the
Seminarzentrum Raach (http://www.szr.at/) about 1 hour south of
Vienna. There will be a bus from Vienna to Raach on the 14th,
returning on the 19th in the evening.

Due to space limitations, rooms will have to be shared. More and
updated information, in particular details of registration,
accommodation, travel grants and conference fee, is available at the
conference website. Please register as soon as possible to be
guaranteed a place at Raach.

We hope that you will accept our invitation and join us in Vienna.

The goal of these conferences is to bring together PhD students and
postdocs in set theory in order to learn from senior researchers in
the field, hear about the latest research and to discuss research
issues in small focused groups.

The second Young Set Theory Workshop will take place between 14-18
April 2009 at the CRM (Mathematics Research Center) in Bellaterra,
near Barcelona (http://www.crm.es).

The conference format will be as follows:
Four senior set theorists have been invited to represent a branch of
Set Theory and give morning tutorials about their work.

The afternoons will be devoted to small group discussion sessions
which will be organised as follows. All participants will be asked to
write a one-page statement about their research. These statements
will be organised into branches of set theory and presented at the
conference. Based on the research statements, specific discussion
sessions will be formed for those working in similar areas and more
general sessions for those interested in getting an overview of the
latest research in each branch of set theory. At the end of the day,
we will meet altogether again to hear a talk by an outstanding invited
postdoc.

All accommodation and meals will be at the Vila Universitaria of the
UAB (which is about 30 minutes from Barcelona by train) on the same
campus as the CRM. Accommodation at Vila Universitaria will be
available from a 13-18 April 2009. Due to space limitations, rooms
will have to be shared and registration may be limited. More and
updated information, in particular details of registration,
accommodation, travel grants and conference fee will be available at
the following website:
